Living With Volcanoes
Nov 18, 2021 7:30 AM
The study of volcanoes and their eruptions has taken on renewed significance over the last 40 years as major eruptions around the world have impacted communities and disrupted patterns of human activity. In parallel with that, there has been an extraordinary development of techniques focused on understanding of how volcanoes work and how the potentially dangerous impact of their eruptions can be mitigated. Ian’s research has focused on volcanoes of the ’Pacific rim of fire’ particularly the southwest Pacific islands and New Zealand. Dr Ian Smith has worked as volcanologist at the Central Volcanological Observatory in Rabaul, Papua New Guinea. He then took up a research fellowship at the University of Toronto in Canada studying some of the oldest volcanic rocks on the planet and their role in the formation of the Earth’s early crust. In 1980 Ian began a teaching position at the University of Auckland where he remained until retirement. |

Rocket Lab Ambassador
Dec 02, 2021 7:00 PM
Sarah Blyde is a project engineer at Rocket Lab, a space company that builds and launches the Electron rocket in New Zealand. Sarah grew up in Auckland and went on to study engineering at the University of Auckland before moving to Western Australia to work as a petroleum engineer. While there, she became fascinated by the growing space industry and decided she wanted to be part of all the action so went to France to do a masters degree in space studies. The pandemic kicked off halfway through and she came home to New Zealand to finish her studies remotely before ending up with her dream job at Rocket Lab! Space isn't her only passion though - you'll often find Sarah out training for her next marathon, on the water kiteboarding, or hiking up a mountain somewhere. |

ONJA update
Mar 03, 2022 6:00 PM
Sam Lucas is the Founder of ONJA - a social enterprise which trains talented, underprivileged Malagasy/Madagascan youth into world class software developers ready to work. Sam is one of our 'overseas' Club member's and resides in Madagascar, returning to NZ very infrequently. Having secured a place in MIQ, he will be released from Isolation in time to present to us at our first Evening meeting for the year. ONJA (meaning ‘Waves’) started their onsite school in December 2018, with 30 exceptionally talent-rich, opportunity-poor students from an initial pool of 250,000. Sam will recap ONJA's start-up story, tell us of the students challenges and triumphs; update us on ‘employment’ success and (maybe) share about plans for the next ‘wave’. |

Proposal of New Waiheke Electric Ferry Service
Apr 07, 2022 6:00 PM
Come and hear how Club Member Simon Jones spends some of his time when not working with Dove Hospice. Simon says... "After several years developing and advocating for this proposal with Auckland Council, AT and Orakei Local Board it is exciting to commence public consultation (referencing our project) to establish a new electric ferry service for cars, bikes and people connecting Orakei Landing with Kennedy Point on Waiheke Island. We’re focussed on delivering a safer, closer and more environmentally friendly alternative to the current monopoly diesel powered services operated by Sealink (the red ferries). We anticipate keen interest in and support for this proposal from both Waihekians and Aucklander’s passionate about improving access to and from this beautiful Island in a new electric ferry service - a first for Auckland". Simon will explain this inspiring 'green' project and update on the February Public consultation and let us know if they received enough support to start planning for the inaugural cruise from Orakei Landing. |
