The President's Pen

Hi All,

We had a fantastic Rotary week last week with Rosie giving an informative talk on the Thursday, followed by what we are hoping is a record breaking Golf Day on Friday.  Thank-you to all that participated in this event and to David and the team for organising it.

I am looking forward to Peter Lesters talk this Thursday so please RSVP to Robyn if you would like to bring a guest.

See you all on Thursday.
Hugh

Meeting in Review - April 8th 2021
Only 20 members and one guest were present at this meeting, but we knew that there would be a great turnout at the Golf Tournament the next day.

Our Guest Speaker was Rosie Boxall.  Rosie is in NZ thanks to a Rotary Global Grant Scholarship.  She is hosted here in Auckland by the RC of Otahuhu and living in Ponsonby.  She is studying for a Master of Arts in Sociology at the University of Auckland and her research project is looking at how Pākehā New Zealanders respond to learning about New Zealand’s history (and other societal issues), and the implications (and potential) this has for peace-building and relationship building.

Rosie's primary sponsoring Rotary Club in the UK is the RC of Baldock and they are supported by 8 other Rotary Clubs in South East England.  Rosie spoke to us about her significant studies in the UK, (Cambridge), Canada and New Zealand and her Rotary journey.  It was a fascinating story and one that to appreciate the full extent of, you needed to be present to hear her talk.

Rosie and her partner love the outdoors and they are very much enjoying what New Zealand has to offer.  To date she has walked 5 of the New Zealand Great Walks!

Rosie indicated to us after the meeting that some members had asked for her email, which is:  rosalynd.boxall@auckland.ac.nz

2021 New World - St. Johns Rotary Golf Tournament
The 2021 New World, (Lunn Ave, East Ridge and Remuera), and St. Johns Rotary Golf Tournament was held last Friday April 9th at the Whitford Park Golf Course.  The "sold-out" event, was a resounding success with a record 33 teams participating and vying for the Winners spot.  The winning team, (pictured here), were from, New World Eastridge, with Soho Wines in second place and our own Chris Herlihy's team a very admirable third.

Thanks to the generosity of New World, St Johns Rotary club members and friends of St. Johns Rotary, many other golfers won an array of prizes.

The final amount raised, which will be shared between Dove Hospice and St. John's Rotary, is not yet known, but it is expected to exceed previous years.  The programs sponsored by St, Johns Rotary such as; RYLA, RYDA, RYPEN, and the Science & Technology Forum to name but a few will benefit from the funds raised.

Needless to say, the success of the event would be insignificant if it wasn't for the generosity of Lunn Ave, Remuera and Eastridge New World stores and members of St. Johns Rotary. Special thanks are also extended to David Hartstone and Graham Fabian for their significant contributions.

Activity necessary to ensure the event was successful began months ago and one of the last off course activities undertaken was the packing of the very full Goody Bags.  Well done team and thanks to all who donated prizes.

Our resident Photographer, "Candid Kev", was also on duty all day, ensuring that a good selection of photos were taken to record the tournament.  A selection of photos of some of the sponsors, the St. John's volunteers and a few want-a-be Rotary golfers can be viewed by clicking "Read More" below.

Time For A Smile

A chicken walks into a library and up to the desk.

“Buk” says the chicken; so the librarian gives the chicken a book

The chicken leaves with the book but returns 5 minutes later.

“Buk” says the chicken again; so the librarian gives the chicken another book.

This goes on about 8 more times until, finally, the librarian leaves the library and goes outside on a break – to the back of the library where there’s a pond.

The chicken is standing on the edge of the pond tossing books to a frog.

The chicken says “Buk, Buk” and the frog says “reddit, reddit”
