The Presidents' Pen

Co-Presidents St. Johns Rotary, Penny McGarry (Ph: 021 702 310), and Lesley Harris (Ph: 027 4935 498)

Just as well we have a spare President as Penny is isolating pending a test - All too common a tale as we soon enter Phase 3 of the Government Red Light System   Fingers crossed Pen, to quote Isabella 'Go well'.

(Thanks to Robyn for her  laptop as mine is an Apple which does not work with the RGC system)

We welcomed Sam Lucas to our meeting and 'ring in' Emily Lit did wonderful job as our speaker!

A good breakfast and fellowship was had by all and Angus aka 'the Sergeant of the day' had a poser " name the singer' - The great Tom Jones was the answer, the clue from Wales was the giveaway! Angus guessed the President's ramble photo as Cornwall Park.

Steele closed the meeting with a note of optimism and a Take Care and Stay safe wish.

Meeting in Review - February 24th 2022
Although current Covid restrictions allow us to meet face to face, many members are being cautious as the Omicron numbers grow.  Accordingly we saw only 16 members and one guest present at last weeks meeting,  However, despite the low number, once again the gathered enjoyed the meeting.

The planned Working Bee at Apirana Reserve last weekend was cancelled.  However, a new date should be known soon so watch this space for more detail.

The Trivia Night has been postponed again, (new date to be advised when known), but we are still keen to hold this important fundraising event, so as soon as possible a new date will be selected.

District Conference is still scheduled to go ahead, but there is a risk this event too will be cancelled.  Updates will continue to be advised as early as possible.

Unfortunately, again our own meeting plans were disrupted by Covid, this time impacting on our planned speaker last week.  However, due to the tenacity of our Club Services Director, Robyn, at very short notice, a replacement speaker was secured and we were delighted to welcome a Rotary Youth Exchange "Rebounder", Emily Lit to speak to us.

Emily spent a year as a RYE student in Denmark in 2017 / 2018 and during her talk she recalled some of the highlights of her exchange year.  She had a great year and she continues to look back at the memories of friends made, the wonderful host families she had, the European excursions experienced, and the class trip from Denmark to South Korea which was a significant highlight.

On her return to New Zealand she went to University and secured a Batchelors Degree in Fine Arts when she graduated in 2020. Emily is currently employed by a company call Affinity Diamonds, in a sales role  Affinity are a relatively new business in New Zealand, but they have been operating in Australia for over 30 years.  The company specialises in the design and manufacture of engagement rings, and considering her next significant goal is getting married,  Affinity could be just the right employer!!

Sincere thanks to Emily for stepping up at very short notice nd sharing with us how being a RYE Student has helped shape her life, and hopefully we can stay in touch and hear from you again at sometime in the not too distant future.
Club Meetings and Other Important Dates
THURSDAY 3rd MARCH - DINNER MEETING - GUEST SPEAKER, All the way from Madagascar, SAM LUCUS:

NOTE:  RSVP REQUIRED - PLEASE ADVISE ROBYN I. TODAY!

Sam is the Founder of ONJA - a social enterprise which trains talented, underprivileged Malagasy/Madagascan youth into world class software developers ready to work.  Sam is one of our 'overseas' Club member's and resides in Madagascar, returning to NZ very infrequently.  Having secured a place in MIQ, he will be released from Isolation in time to present to us at our first Evening meeting for the year.

ONJA (meaning 'Waves') started their onsite school in December 2018, with 30 exceptionally talent-rich, opportunity-poor students from an initial pool of 250,000.

Sam will recap ONJA's start-up story, tell us of the students challenges and triumphs; update us on 'employment' success and (maybe) share plans for the next 'wave'.

THURSDAY 10th MARCH - BREAKFAST MEETING - GUEST SPEAKER MARGARET CAIN.  TOPIC - The positives and negatives of raising and hosting a Blind Foundation Puppy.
Margaret will present to us on the positive and negative challenges of welcoming Ginny, a Blind Foundation Dog "in training" into their home.  She will also share how the training is coming along for husband Miles.  (Miles is an esteemed club member!  In March Miles celebrates 19 years of St. Johns Rotary membership).

We Need Your Help!
The Salvation Army have asked if we can assist once again with Food Box Packing next Saturday morning March 5th.

Perhaps a couple of our members who are working during the week and have been unable to assist on our normal Wednesday schedule would like a assist.  If so please contact our coordinator for this programme, Murray H.

Lost & Found
Found on Attendance desk following our February 24th meeting - One pair of ready-readers +1.75, grey/black.  Contact Robyn if they belong to you and you want them back!
Kev's (Aubrey's), Candid Photo Album
Candid Kev extended his apologies last week, but made arrangements for his very capable backup, Aubrey, to click away on his behalf and below are a few shots recording last weeks meeting;

Feel free to have another egg Sam, just make sure you come to the Working Bee on Sunday.

On the count of 3 you can open your eyes again!

This feels kinda good - maybe I should put my hand up to be President.

I was sure that it was "Loud Shirt" day today.

One for you and one for me.....

I told you that she would be a good speaker even if she doesn't know who the Blues are!!
