Be sure to diary this date now to ensure we have good numbers attending and that we start the year with the great enthusiasm that St. Johns is renowned for. Following another lively Sergeants Session with Cheri, Club Services Director Robyn introduced guest speaker Briar Leith - CEO of Brucha New Zealand. About to start her last semester at AUT, Briar is on target to complete her BA majoring in International Relations and minoring in Public Relations. While studying, she has taken on a small international business, with her partner, called "Brucha NZ". This is a business startup in Mexico, now expanding in key markets around the world. Briar was asked to share her journey with us. Her talk was interesting, thought provoking, very personal and emotional. At the age of 15 Briar travelled to Argentina on an AFS (American Field Services) Scholarship. She experienced a very difficult start to the year, but in the end, the hardest part of the exchange was saying goodbye to friends and host families. The Argentinian experience ignited a travel bug and within months of returning home Briar received a scholarship to attend the United World College in Hong Kong. The scholarship was for 12 months, but after only 6 months she was back in New Zealand and was admitted to Starship with a mental health condition which she has been battling for the last six years. It is, however, very pleasing to see and hear her now as she overcomes these health issues and is very busy with Brucha. Brucha is a business that primarily produces "Phone Accessories", with each one being unique. They have been wanting to establish a website but business is so good, launching a website with only limited or no stock to sell, would not be a good move at this time. Thanks again for your presentation Briar and for sharing your very personal journey - best wishes for your future success. |
