The Presidents' Pen

Co-Presidents St. Johns Rotary, Penny McGarry (Ph: 021 702 310), and Lesley Harris (Ph: 027 4935 498).

What an intelligent bunch our Club members are!

Last week, although we had to cook our own dinner, we all enjoyed Zoom fellowship while testing our Rotary, Bowls, NZ Food and General Knowledge.

The winners of each section were promised the customary Chocolate Fish by Robyn, who Penny also awarded a chocolate fish for her outstanding Rotary Quiz.

It was lovely to be joined by Prahba and Donald and Penny, Donald was so impressed by our Quiz he has 'borrowed' it for his Club meeting on Monday!

We all learned 'something'  - even if it was that we can still meet and enjoy each other's company in Lockdown!

"Zoom" Meeting in Review - September 2nd 2021

Our meeting last week was once again relegated to a Zoom meeting as we remain in Lockdown.  Unfortunately it would appear that this will be the case for a few more weeks  However, it was great to see 21 members and 5 guests, Zoom in to enjoy some virtual fellowship and a fun Quiz.  Special thanks to Co-President Lesley and Robyn for the effort they put in preparing and presenting the Quizes.

The quiz was broken down into three subject matters, and

the winners were, (We think);

General Knowledge – Murray Hutchinson

Rotary Knowledge – Beryl & Colin Robinson

Bowls Knowledge – Muriel & Phil

and we were assured by all players, including the winners, that surfing of Google did not play a part in the results.  Congrats to all winners and PP Robyn is taking good care of your winning Chocolate Fish until we meet again and this can be presented to you!

We are looking forward to seeing members at our next Zoom Meeting, Thursday September 9th and don't forget, if you have any Lockdown stories or photos that you would like to share, please send these to the Bulletin Editor; walshp@xtra.co.nz

Club Meetings and Other Important Dates
THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 9th - Breakfast Zoom Meeting 7.30am - Guest Speaker, Sharon Crean:

Sharon from BeyondWater is no stranger to our club and last presented to us in November 2019.  She, and her husband Pete, are currently back in NZ but are, of course, working on fundraisers for post-lockdown, to help continue funding their projects back in Kenya.

BeyondWater is a not-for-profit organization working across East Africa. Their focus is on ensuring schools, medical clinics, children's home and remote communities have access to safe, clean drinking water and sanitation facilities.  These include deep bore wells, guttering, water tanks, hand washing facilities, toilets and health education programmes.

BeyondWater is registered as a trust both in New Zealand and Kenya, and as a charity in Australia.

THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 16th -  Breakfast Meeting venue TBC, but Potentially Zoom Meeting.  Guest Speaker, Simon O'Conner MP Tamaki

Simon O'Connor is our local MP and well known to many of our membership.  He is a member of the National Party and is the spokesperson for customs, and associate spokesperson for housing and social development.  He is also Chair of the Foreign Affairs, Defence, and Trade committee.

Rotary Club of St Johns Charitable Trust
ROTARY CLUB OF ST JOHNS CHARITABLE TRUST:

The last meeting of Trustees was via Zoom on 31st August 2021.

Present:  All six trustees were in attendance - Penny McGarry, Simon Jones, Mark Hillman, Peter Walsh, Patrick Bell, Lesley Harris

Finances:  Accounts for the months of March, April, May and July were received and had been circulated to all Trustees and subsequently approved by email.  Bruce Howe has circulated the June 30 2021 End of Year Accounts to all Trustees for approval.  A Resolution was prepared to document that these accounts are approved by all Trustees.

Grant Applications:  All received applications received since the last meeting have been approved by email.

General Business:

a)  Great Kiwi Anzac Day Breakfast Charitable Trust has been wound up as per Michele Mann’s instructions.  Negotiations with the Auckland Museum regarding the gifting of Trust Funds are underway.  Once an agreement is reached funds will be transferred from  the RCOSJ Charitable Trust to the Museum.

b)  Retirement of Trustees;  All Trustees have been advised of the Trustee retirement and rotation clause within the Amendment of the Trust Deed.  Subject to Board approval, all Trustees will be asked to retire and those who wish, can then offer themselves up for re-election.  Some Club Members have indicated their interest in stepping up should vacancies occur following this process. The President/s are responsible for the appointing of Trustees.

This is an interim measure.  The Trust is further recommending to the Board that the rotation of Trustees rules change and this change will be presented to the members after Board approval.

Next Meeting:  December 8th 2021
