The President's Pen

Hi All,

Thanks for coming to breakfast last week and apologies that the audio visuals were not quite up to our usual standard. Jan pushed on and gave a great presentation of the current markets and what to do with our savings. Hopefully it gave everyone some food for thought.

We managed to collect $150 for City Mission which the board has agreed to top up to $250. This is in line with assisting our local communities.

Please reach out to members you have not seen in a while and invite them for breakfast, or even a friend who may be interested in doing some work in the local community.  Everyone is welcome.

Take care and see you on Thursday.

Meeting in Review - October 15th 2020
President Hugh opened the meeting and, together with the Directors, updated the members on current activity that the club is involved with.
  • We have recently received a request for support from the City Mission and accordingly it was agreed that the Sergeants' takings at this meeting would be donated to the Mission,
  • The Board have also agreed to donate $1,000 to the "Tag-on Tag-of End Polio Now" event on October 23rd.  The station at which our cheque will be handed over is still to be confirmed, but members who can are encouraged to be part of the formalities on the day, if they are available,
  • The next Food Packing Working Bee for the Salvation Army will be held between 10 am to 2 pm on October 27th.  Please contact PP Robyn if you can assist,
  • The Science and Technology Committee were delighted to advise that we have selected, and will be partially sponsoring, three "awesome students" to participate in this year's Science and Technology Forum,
Following the club notices it was then time to introduce our guest speaker to the 24 members and 3 guests present.  We were fortunate to enjoy a very informative talk from Jan Barraclough, an Investment Advisor  with Craigs Investment Partners.  After coming to terms with some very challenging AV and sound equipment failures, Jan held the audiences attention for the next 30 minutes as she took us through her perspective of the current financial situation being experienced in New Zealand and in major markets globally.

Many of our members once relied on interest rates from the likes of Term Deposits for their income.  Unfortunately as interest rates rapidly approach zero %, many members are now becoming more and more reliant on other forms of volatile investment such as equities, bonds, properties or whatever and Jan shared her thoughts in a format easily understood, and the talk and following Q & A discussion was very informative.  There was even the opportunity for some jovial political debate between members, on the eve of the New Zealand election!

John M. thanked Jan for her time and her presentation.

Ruapotaka School
Richard, (Ritchie), from Ruapotaka school was identified by his teacher as one young student who was in much need of some help for his school work and his family was struggling to assist - along comes St. Johns Rotary who saw the need and Ritchie was last week presented with a new Chromebook.

As you can see from the attached photo's, this has been very much appreciated.  Thanks for coordinating the presentation Kevin.

Time For A Smile

...and some more OXYMORONS;

  • Why are a "wise man" and a "wise guy" opposites?
  • Why do "overlook" and "oversee" mean opposite things?
  • Why is "phonics" not spelled the way it sounds?
  • If work is so terrific, why do they have to pay you to do it?
  • If all the world is a stage, where is the audience sitting?
  • If love is blind, why is lingerie so popular?
