The Presidents' Pen

Co-Presidents St. Johns Rotary, Penny McGarry (Ph: 021 702 310), and Lesley Harris (Ph: 027 4935 498)

Happy New Year!

We hope you and your family have enjoyed the Summer break and are safe and well,
and we look forward to welcoming you back to our breakfast meeting next week.
Your Board meets on Tuesday 8th February and the Trust on February 17th, so it is
Rotary business as usual.

However it may prove a bit challenging and we may have to think a bit differently, but we are used to that, we have done so over the previous two years.

2022 will be a great year in Rotary, see you all at our first breakfast meeting on the 10th of February

Club Meetings and Other Important Dates
THURSDAY FEBRUARY 10TH, FIRST MEETING OF 2022! - BREAKFAST MEETING - GUEST SPEAKERS JADA MacFie and JO BRAIN:
From Tamaki Restoration Company.  Newly appointed GM of Connections and People Experience, Jada MacFie, and GM Strategy and Master Planning, Jo Brain, have been invited to give us an update.

THURSDAY 17TH FEBRUARY - BREAKFAST MEETING - GUEST SPEAKER TERRY BECKETT:  Fresh Water - not what it always seems:
A long time ago, Terry graduated 1st class honours MSC in marine biology from University of Auckland.  He initiated commercial aquaculture for Watties (oyster farming, eel farming and salmon farming) before general business development.
Terry created a large tourist park in Auckland showcasing New Zealand’s culture, nature and agriculture.  He has also held senior management positions in the waste management industry specialising in hazardous and liquid wastes in New Zealand and Australia.  A very keen recreational fisherman, he is deeply involved with Waikato University in investigating the water quality of Lake Tarawera.

THURSDAY 24TH FEBRUARY - BREAKFAST MEETING - GUEST SPEAKER BRIAR LEITH:
About to start her last semester at AUT, Briar is on target to complete her BA majoring in International Relations and minoring in Public Relations. While studying she has transformed a hobby to a small international business.  Briar will talk about her journey - how at age 15 an AFS scholarship to Argentina led to her current studies, and being a representative of both kiwi and indigenous NZ culture has shaped her as a Global Citizen.  https://instagram.com/brucha_nz

What Did You Do Over The Summer Break?
Well, based on the number of submissions to the Bulletin, it would appear that not much happened over the summer, or maybe we were all too busy enjoying the sunshine to have the time to send any material to the Editor!

We did, however, get one entry under the category of "Wedding Of The Year", and what a wedding it appears to have been, when Alex, daughter of PP Robyn and husband Tony, were  married in Clevedon on a beautiful summer evening in mid January.

After significant negotiation with the Bride's Mother and her agent Tony, we have been given exclusive access to some of the wedding photographs for publication in this weeks Bulletin.  These are inserted below.  We also understand that there is another Ingram Wedding planned for next month which will also be vying for the title of wedding of the year;

Father of the Bride, aka Mrs Ingrams Agent, looking very proud and very much the part.

The MOTB entertaining one of the well known guests.

What a setting!!!

Here's hoping there was cake leftover and and that these leftovers will be served up at breakfast this week.
Where Is Prabha?
Where is the lovely Prabha?

Some of our members may recall that Prabha has been in Australia since May last year.  She initially remained in touch by attending a few of our Zoom meetings; and has also remained in touch with Robyn via What’s App.  For members not aware, our lovely Prabha travelled to OZ to have an extended visit with her sister and has been unable to return to NZ due to the lock-out.  Having achieved NZ Residency, the next step for her was going to be purchasing her own small home.  But, as we all know prices in Auckland certainly messed up that plan.

Prabha has two wonderful sons, one settled in Auckland and one settled back in South Africa.  As it is so difficult to return here, she will shortly be relocating back to South Africa to instead settle close to her son (and his family) there.  She is very sad to leave NZ behind (for the near future) but is also very excited to see her SA based son and family.

Prabha joined our Club in September 2020 and quickly became a very active member – Rotoroa Island weeding trip; Motutapu nursery expert; Sally Army foodbank packing; foodbank collection at New World volunteer; Golf Tourney volunteer etc, etc.  She gave everything a go and had such fun doing it.  She is a charming lady and was an asset to our Club.

Prabha very recently sent this message to Robyn:

"there is no sufficient amount of words that equal the generosity you showed me during my time with St Johns Rotary Club.  My life is so blessed with some of the most amazing people.  Thank you for being part of my journey.

Prabha’s move back to SA is our Club’s loss, but hopefully Rotary SA’s gain!  In another recent What’s App video call, when they stopped laughing trying to look good ‘on line’ Robyn strongly urged Prabha to look into joining a Rotary Club in SA once she is settled.  She is utterly disappointed she can’t continue being involved here with her ‘favourite’ club, but very positive about what the future holds.  Prabha advised (with much laughter) that she has spoken so highly and so often about her time and experiences with Rotary Club of St Johns, that both her sons have already searched the internet to scope out possible clubs to visit and/or join once she is settled.  (How awesome is that RCSJ?) and Prabha doesn’t think she will find a Club matching the quality of ours (LOL) but she promised to give it go.

We all extend our very best wishes for the next part of her personal journey and urge her to let us know about the exciting continuation of her Rotary journey.
