The President's Pen

Kia Ora,

We had a casual, but well attended, Zoom meeting last Thursday which gave members the opportunity to catch-up and chat about various initiatives.

We heard the exciting news about our booked-out golf day, progress on RYLA, RYPEN, Science Scholars, and various other exciting programs. Allan gave us an update on District and more importantly his new boat.

We are back at the Golf Club this week so please join us for a great brekkie and some fellowship.

Take Care

Hugh

Meeting in Review - March 4th 2021
So much for the best laid plans....once again our Scheduled Meeting was cancelled at short notice due to Covid Lock-down, but all was not lost and another Zoom Meeting was pulled together at short notice.

21 members zoomed in for a "Club Chat" where members spoke about what was ever on their mind.

Surprise surprise, Murray arrived late and missed the team photo, but his plan was to secure a single portrait shot of himself which he was successful in doing and of course arriving late is in keeping with his normal habits!

Unfortunately our guest speaker had to cancel as his presentation was not conducive to a Zoom Meeting and we will get to hear from him at a future meeting.

A few of the topics raised included;
  • Advice that the PE Training scheduled this past weekend was cancelled, due to Covid,
  • Kevin once again had to cancel his Pauanui holiday, but he is rescheduled to depart on the 14th, so we all have our fingers crossed that it will go ahead.
  • Tom has again asked all members to identify potential candidates for RYLA - please see separate story below.
  • We were treated to the news from Claire, that ONJA has secured their first contract. It is with a UK Startup and the successful student is Sarah, whom we met on a zoom meeting last year when Sam and Sarah updated us on progress at that time.
  • Golf  Tournament - David advised that all is go for the Golf Tournament - all teams secured and no further sponsorship is needed.  Leslie is still looking for volunteers.  Please contact her if you can help for all or part of the day.
  • DGN Allan gave a brief update on District activity, but there was little to report as much of the normal activity, events and travel have been restricted as Covid continues to impact us in one way or another.  Allan also advised that he was very pleased with the way St. Johns' members are stepping up to fill the support roles that will be needed to help him and Sue as they prepare for the District Governor role next year.
Club Activities & Other Important Dates to Diary

THRSDAY MARCH 11th - BREAKFAST MEETING - Confirmed to be held at Remuera Golf Club under Level 2 Covid proptocols.
Speakers: St John's Rotary sponsored students reporting back on January's Rotary National Science & Technology Forum.  Our Club sponsored three Y12 students to attend the Forum this summer:  Mya and Joshua from Glendowie College, and Peter from Sacred Heart.  Now, back at school in Y13, they will share 'some' of their experience of the two week live-in forum with us.

AND WAIT - THERES MORE!

Over January, we sponsored another recipient to go to Outward Bound.  This was Vincent O'Connor, a teacher from Sacred Heart. Vincent is also looking forward to presenting back on his course and how he got on.

THURSDAY MARCH 18th - BREAKFAST MEETING - Speaker: Stuart McEwen.

Stuart is the CEO for Youth Basketball NZ, an organisation which helps young people to reach their potential in sport and life. They offer school programmes, wellness support, club basketball, camps and coach development. Stuart is currently collaborating with Glen Taylor Principal Chris Herlihy to develop a pilot program which will be offered as a replacement for Discovery. The goal is to develop a programme that can be rolled out for the Manaiakalani cluster of schools.  For more information on Stuart's organisations - check out their website:  https://www.ybnz.org/

FRIDAY April 9th - St Johns Rotary's largest fundraising event of the year - our Golf Tournament.

Great news, this is now sold out.  If you haven't already raised your hand to help on the day, please contact Lesley who is coordinating the large volunteer team who are required to run a successful tournament on the day.
