Co-Presidents St. Johns Rotary, Penny McGarry (Ph: 021 702 310), and Lesley Harris (Ph: 027 4935 498).
Only a few of us braved the cold and attended the meeting on Thursday, and what a treat you missed, apart from the usual fellowship, and a very yummy breakfast,
We had the pleasure of listening to our speaker Eddie Uini from Orange Sky NZ. His story about the people he helps makes us realise how lucky we all are. It was great to hear from someone with such a big heart who saw the need and has done something to address it!! Awesome story
There was a brief report from Directors and a report on the Board meeting. Angus, our Sergeant, was quizmaster extraordinaire and tested our ability to 'complete the sentence/phrase' most of which we were quite competent at!
All in all a good meeting, and hopefully we will see better numbers next week as we have the DG and Assistant DG coming!
A small group of 18 members and two guests assembled at the Remuera Golf Club for our August 12th breakfast meeting.
We received a warm welcome from our Co-Presidents and an enjoyable twist on the Sergeants session from Sergeant Angus. Our Presidents updated the meeting on the recent Board Meeting, which is summarised in a separate story below.
Before introducing our guest speaker, members were reminded of upcoming events and meetings, all of which will continue to be promoted via the Bulletin.
Our guest speaker was Eddie Uini, Head of Operations for "Orange Sky New Zealand", (OS), was hosted and introduced by Lynette. Simply put, Orange Sky provides free laundry, warm showers and genuine conversation to support the 41,000 people experiencing homelessness in New Zealand. Eddie's first exposure to OS was in Australia where they started 7 years ago and now operate 32 vans. He was so impressed with the Australian operation that on his return to New Zealand he became a key instigator of the first OS international mobile laundry and shower service.
Through the thousands of loads of laundry and showers Eddie has helped provide, he knows just how the power of a conversation can impact someone's life. Eddie ensures the efficiency of their services and plays an integral role in supporting and growing the Orange Sky NZ volunteer network to have over 250 volunteers in the 3 years they have been operating in New Zealand. Each mobile van contains two washing machines, one dryer and one shower. Currently there are two vans operating daily in Auckland and one each in Wellington, Christchurch and Hamilton. Adding additional vans in other cities are planned as and when funds allow.
Each van costs $100,000 to purchase and convert. These, and other running costs, are met by fundraising and sponsorship. Over the last year OS have secured 1,000 individual sponsors who together have raised in excess of $100,000. Continued success of the service will primarily be attributed to how successful OS is in securing sponsors. With the dedication of volunteers like Eddie, and the passion he has in seeing the service continue and grow, they are in good hands. Thank you for taking the time to talk to us Eddie and very best wishes for the continued success of Orange Sky New Zealand.

Ever wondered why you instantly ‘click’ with some people and feel as though you have been friends for life, yet there are some who can rub you up the wrong way – sometimes before they even open their mouth!
Ever given thought to how you could get on better with the people you work with? What about that person you share a life with today is actually the same person you married?
And then there is the kids – even though they have been raised in the same home – can be so completely different? Every day the roads are filled with different people heading in different directions with different goals in mind, yet all of us drive smoothly along with few mishaps because we all understand some common laws: we stop at stop signs and red lights, we go on green, and we try to follow the speed limit.
However in our relationships, both in the workplace and at home, we seem to have a few more bumps. We wish we could straighten out all those other people – those very same people who want to straighten us out!
Regardless of your upbringing, genetics or circumstances the key is knowing and understanding our differences.
Come for a fun and entertaining evening with New Zealand’s most acclaimed professional award winning speaker Allison Mooney. You will discover specific keys can enhance your life. And you will see how to truly enrich the partnerships with workmates your family, and all of those you come in contact with – all in a simple, unique and fun way.
This meeting will be at their Club: Carlton Cornwall Bowling Club, 126 Market Rd, Epsom. RSVP's essential and to Robyn please: robyn.ingram@outlook.com.
See the next story titled "Time is Right" and please note that the RSVP is due now!
EARLY ADVICE OF CHANGES TO OUR ACTIVITY CALENDAR IN SEPTEMBER:
Instead of our scheduled meeting on September 23rd we will defer by one day and have our QUIZ night on Friday September 24th. Note Change of Date. Our annual Quiz night is a major fundraising event for the club, so now is a good time to ensure this date is in your diary, and booking your table of 10. Single tickets are available at $35 each or $300 for a table of 10.
Please note that the date for the next Rotary Leadership Institute (RLI) has been postponed toSunday 26 September (instead of 29 August). Interested? Please contact Beryl as soon as possible.
Have you noticed 'TBA' in the Upcoming Speaker list? Well, it's not there to create mystery and suspense! TBA generally means we are having difficulty securing a speaker for that date. If you have any ideas, hints or leads for possible Guest Speakers for our morning and evening meetings, please let your Club Services Director (Robyn) know.
All topics are considered, but it must be remembered that we don't have a budget to pay for professional speakers - although our gift tea-towel is very highly prized! In special circumstances (and usually with prior permission) the Sergeants collection can be especially allocated.
I look forward to any hints to add to our contact list.
Last week, our resident Handymen, Aubrey and Miles, were on hand at the Glendowie Community Centre at Crossfields Reserve, to install the AED pictured.
This AED was funded by the Glendowie College Rotaract Club from previously raised funds.
Also pictured is Vee Samuel, Manager of the Community Centre who along with St. Johns Rotary extended their thanks to the Rotaract Club and congratulated them on funding this potential life saving Defibrillator.
All our meetings are great fun, although if you want to introduce someone to Rotary but are hesitant to do so until “the time is right”, because you want them to have an extra special first experience, then that extra special opportunity is coming soon.
Everyone enjoys a great, motivational speaker … who lifts our mood, so we feel great! Along with that, if the atmosphere of the occasion is vibrant, your guest will feel included and enjoy themselves.
Our combined meeting with Remuera Rotary on Monday 30 August is the perfect time to bring along someone to learn a little about Rotary, and to meet fellow Rotarians. This will be a popular gathering with many in attendance where they can chat with others over a drink and a meal and be inspired by a top-rated motivational speaker … Allie Mooney.
So how about it? Ask your potential member if they would like to come, and RSVP as detailed below:
After this initial introduction to Rotary, then get them along to our Quiz Night on Friday 24 September, or to a St Johns Rotary club meeting as a follow up (remember that their first Rotary meeting meal is complimentary for prospective members, as they are hosted by our club).

Last month one of our guest speakers was Danielle Bergin, Founder and CEO of Island Child Charity Trust. This week we received the following email - please take a couple of minutes to read this, and hopefully one of our members will be able to assist or know someone who can. If that is the case please contact Danielle direct;
"Dear Robyn,
II thoroughly enjoyed being a recent guest speaker. Thank you to all members for the opportunity. Several members asked for a regular update email.
After I spoke, we had several carloads of donations and one offer of a regular Volunteer.
What we need:
Has anyone got a storage unit Glen Innes area… a commercial building or easily accessible garage or empty shop?
We need storage facility at affordable cost. It is for donated preloved furniture and whiteware … we need to store it .. and then distribute it for free when homeless families move in to their HNZC home.
Our current under house storage is not coping with the volume of furniture donated, because with the increase of families coming through the shelter (55-70 families per year) most families need a full house-lot of preloved furniture. Otherwise they receive a key and empty house to call a home. It is better educational outcomes for the children if the home has furniture and a less stressed environment.
May a member know of somewhere suitable, or please consider asking their friends
Warmest regards to you all, and thank you once again
