Co-Presidents St. Johns Rotary, Gary Key (Ph: 021 611169), and Graham Fabian (Ph: 021 826292).
Dear Members,
Thank you so much for those that came along to Change Over last night, to those that couldn't make it, we know that you were present in spirit—demonstrated by the constant popping of balloons!!!
A great night, full of fun, entertainment and irreverence capped off by an enthralling presentation by Proud Club Member Peter Boshier.
Sunday 9am—11.00am Project #1 Completed moved 30m3 of Mulch —-Great Effort Team.
Graham will be taking our first meeting on Thursday as Han and I will be driving (Roadie) to Wellington for District Conference.
Again our sincere thanks, we promise to do our best as your Presidents
Well - what a great night! St. Johns Change-Over Dinners just seem to get better and better. The fellowship, the food, the people, the quality of the speakers, the surprises and the formalities, all being highlights of the evening.
Unfortunately due to Covid and other commitments several of the invited guests were unable to attend, but those who did attend certainly enjoyed the evening.
A big thank you to Penny and Lesley for guiding us through a very challenging year, and I think we saw a touch of great relief as the formalities commenced and the chain of President was passed on to Gary Key and Graham Fabian, who are now our new Co-Presidents for the next 12 months.
One of Lesley and Penny's last formalities was the acknowledgement of the Board Members and the Operational Support team for their efforts over the last 12 months and the announcement that Alex Gatt was awarded with a Paul Harris Sapphire Award. The only disappointment was that Alex has been fending off a bad case of Covid for the past week or so and he was unable to attend.
One of Gary and Graham's first duties was to reconfirm their Board and Support team for the next year and we thank them for their commitment and enthusiasm.
The final formality of the night was a true treat for all when Honorary Member Peter Boshier, was invited to speak to those gathered. Peter's talk very much focused on his experiences and memories of his membership of St. Johns Rotary, which is now approaching 33 years, having joined the club on October 25th 1989. He talked about how being a member of Rotary has helped him so positvely in his career, as well as his personal life and he congratulated the club and its members for maintaining the disciplines of the, often small, but very important things in life, and he referred to the Rotary Four-way test and just how much of what he does on a daily basis in his role of Ombudsman to the Government of New Zealand resonates back to the Test.
The Four-way test is posted in the Bulletin every week and this week is no exception, (Members are encouraged to review this document which is published below).
To have Peter speak at our club twice in the last month is a testament to his affection for the club and we are truly honored to have you as a member, Peter, and a very big thank you to you and Sheryll for taking the time to join us on this special evening!!
At any St. Johns Rotary meeting, or event, there are always plenty of photo opportunities and this years change-over is no exception. Unfortunately we are unable to publish all photos, but hopefully those below will convey a good record of the evenings activities.
Click on "Read More" for a taste and more photos will be included in next weeks Bulletin!
THURSDAY JUNE 23rd - BREAKFAST MEETING - IN-HOUSE SPEAKERS. Liz Gunn and Margaret Voyce.
We often comment that our own members make the best presenters, and this week shouldn't be any different as these two members share a little more of their business and personal lives and their interests.
THURSDAY JUNE 30th - BREAKFAST MEETING - GUEST SPEAKER: ROGER STAMP - Apirana Reserve Project;
Roger will update us with progress and ongoing plans for the Apirana Reserve Project (Glen Innes) of which our Club is very actively supporting with working bees for weeding, mulching and eventually, planting.
THURSDAY JULY 7th - DINNER MEETING - GUEST SPEAKER TBA:
Not even 12 hours had elapsed since the St. Johns Change-over and 15 members plus a few family members and friends converged on Apirana Reserve for our first Working Bee of the year.
The activity was to spread a huge mountain of mulch across the next area in the reserve which will be planted out on July 23rd. As they say, a picture is as good as a thousand words and nothing could be truer than these few pictures of our members hard at work distributing the mulch in piles one meter apart, ready for the planting. More photos will be included in next weeks Bulletin.
Many thanks to Peter B for coordinating and a big thanks to all the volunteers!
District Change-over will be held on Sunday July 3rd from 9.00 am to 12.30 pm. Like our own Change-over, this is an important event in the Rotary Year and St. Johns member and DG Elect Allan Smith and his wife Sue are looking forward to seeing a good turnout from St. Johns. Allan Smith, District 9920's, DG Elect, has been deep in District activity for the last two years and he is just going to get busier and busier up until District Change-Over on July 3rd and then it will be all on!!
There are many individuals and committees across the District that will support Allan and Sue in their role, and one of these groups is his Assistant Governors who attended their first meeting last week at the Smith's home. Unfortunately Covid continues to impact with several of the AG's unable to attend, however those who could, joined the meeting via Zoom. Also in attendance were Colin and Peter W from St. Johns, in their new District roles as Co-Editors of the District Newsletter and Communications.
Our school was lucky enough to participate in the recent St John's Rotary funded sailing programme.
After our first attempt being cancelled due to Covid, we were fortunate to be offered another opportunity. Our children had the most amazing day, they loved every minute and just had the best time! Unfortunately, I wasn't lucky enough to go down and see them, but I was having photos sent to me regularly throughout the day and when the children came back to school, they were so excited to share the stories with me. We even had one child who didn't want to go, but with some coxing was encouraged to try and he was bubbling over with excitement when he came back to school.
I think the parents who went down with them enjoyed it as much as the children. They loved seeing them fall out of the boats!
Thank you so much for the opportunity and the sponsorship to allow various schools to do this. We were so grateful to be selected and so appreciative of your support with this programme.
