Guest Speaker - Roger Stamp: Peter B introduced Roger of Apirana Reserve fame, to the meeting. Anyone who has participated in one of the Working Bee's knows Roger, and by the end of the meeting others certainly felt as if they knew him as a very good friend of St. Johns Rotary. Roger gave a very good overview of the work at Apirana Reserve that he and his team mates, Ken & Nanda, (not present), have been doing since the planting and weeding programmes on Motatapu were halted back in 2019. Apirana Reserve is a labour of love for the three of them which is one of the reasons they appreciate the relationship with the RCSJ and the support we have given over the past two years. The history of the development, and the neglect, of the reserve dates back to the 1950's and Roger's talk was supported by numerous "Before and After" photographs as well as many other maps and photos. Initially the work that these three volunteers undertook at the Reserve, which runs between the Railway Line and Apirana Ave up the hill to the tunnel, was without any council or railways support. This, however, has changed significantly over the last couple of years and now there is regular and good conversation between all parties plus the provision of tools, plants, mulch and other necessary supplies being made available as and when required. To date 650 native trees and plants have been planted and their growth rate has been astounding and it is expected that the next 650 plants, which will be planted on July 23rd, will do just as well. Both Roger and Ken can't thank St Johns enough for the support to date, and they are looking forward to that continuing, starting on July 23rd. The club also thanks both Roger and Ken for taking the time to share their Apirana experiences and for the work that they undertake for the good of the community. |
