Co-Presidents St. Johns Rotary, Gary Key (Ph: 021 611169), and Graham Fabian (Ph: 021 826292).
Greetings fellow Rotarians,
Thank you to those of you who attended our meeting on Thursday morning - and what a busy meeting it was!!!
Great to see Past President Honorary Member Andy McCarrison, who dropped in to see us all on his Epic “Walking The Length of New Zealand” adventure, Andy, thank you for your off the cuff description of the journey thus far - true inspiration!!!
Members, did you happen to notice the size of Andy’s breakfast!!! He was offered a “ doggie bag” (oops bad pun, considering what Host Milo’s Doggie did to Andy’s walking Boots !!!), I do apologise. All the best Andy from all of us at RCSJ !!!
As it was the Formal Club visit and address of DG Allan and Sue, we were all captivated by the life stories of both Allan and Sue - thank you both for sharing your life before, and together and congratulations to you both for the effort and energy you are putting into your DG year, and also in the manner in which you are proudly representing
Co-President Gary opened the meeting and introduced our guests, DG Allan Smith and Sue Smith, (not really guests, but Allan was visiting as the DG) - more on that later. Also present was our AG Joyti, and Honorary Member, Andy McCarrison, who just happened to be passing through.
Aubrey provided a brief review on last weeks quiz night which was great fun and very successful. A final financial summary is still being prepared, but it is looking very likely that the net profit will be north of $12,500. Many thanks again to all members who participated, sponsored, or volunteered.
Peter B indicated that there will be at least one more Working Bee at Apirana Reserve before the end of the year, but no date has been set at this time.
As there were no additional Directors Reports, Co-President Garry moved on to introducing Honorary Member Andy Mc. to share highlights of his walk to date, as covered off in the Presidents pen above and just in case you were interested in seeing Andy's breakfast take a look at this photo!
Our Snap Chatterer at this meeting was to be Miles Cain, and although he did get up to speak, he got a little side tracked and proceeded to auction off a book which he found to be of great value, as did Murray H. who won the auction by handing over $150! Thank you both for your generosity.
DG Allan and his very charming wife Sue were our guest speakers at this meeting, and prior to sharing his vision as DG, both Allan and Sue shared "their" story, starting from school age to their careers, how, where and when they met and their business and life before Rotary. Very, very interesting and sincere thanks to you both for sharing.
Allan then spoke to International President, Jennifer Jones key objectives for the year which included;
Expand Rotary’s reach with high-level media around the world
Imagine Rotary with Diversity, Equity and Inclusion

Prior to ending their presentation, Sue updated the meeting on her ROMAC activities currently in place or in planning. There are some wonderful success stories, and by the sounds of it, there will be many more to come. We congratulate Sue and her team on the efforts to date and wish them the very best for other activities being planned.
One of ROMAC's current fundraising efforts is selling raffle tickets for a beautiful hand made quilt, as pictured. Tickets are only $5 and if you would like to purchase please contact Sue who will be happy to provide payment details and provide you with a ticket number.

Here is a good opportunity to support our good friends at Auckland Rotaract as well as a very good cause - Give Every Child A Future (GECAF).
GECAF is Rotary’s project to vaccinate 100,000 children in nine Pacific countries against three diseases to celebrate 100 years of Rotary in the South Pacific.
Auckland City Rotaract is holding an outdoor Zumba session to raise funds for GECAF on 5 November from 10am to 12noon at The Rifle Range, Henderson. There will be two sessions of Zumba for beginners and for everyone, led by Fleur Pepperell of Zumba Hobsonville Point.
There will be prizes for best dressed so be sure to come in an eye catching costume.
Food and drink will be available on site, but you should bring a sun hat and sunscreen.
There will be collection buckets on the day. Rotaract Auckland City has obtained matching funding from the Harold Thomas Trust up to $10,000 so every dollar raised will be doubled.
"BeyondWater" have been guest speaker at our Club on several occasions, and they have come to us seeking our support for a fund-raising exercise
Dear Rotary Club of St. Johns( Auckland)
Since we began in 2007, BeyondWater and Rotary clubs across Australasia have partnered together to give 240,000 people (and counting) clean water and sanitation facilities EVERY DAY to East Africans.
What began with our founders Pete & Sharon Crean (RC Pohutukawa Coast, NZ) to give one child clean water has expanded to schools, medical clinics and remote communities across seven countries. Our leadership program, The Girl Project, now operates in four locations in Kenya and Rwanda.
With the generosity of Rotary, Interact and Rotaract Clubs thousands of students now have good toilets and somewhere to wash their hands.
Our passion for fighting poverty is as strong as ever. Now that Covid restrictions have lessened we’re pleased to announce our 2022 Pedal Against Poverty NZ/US Tour is happening over November and December. Our New Zealand crew will be cycling the length of the North Island. For those in Texas, they’ll be taking up the cycling cause on the day the Kiwis finish. Next year, we aim to add Australia to our tour route.
Our goal is to raise $50,000. This will enable us to build ten blocks of toilets, giving at least 4,000 children a much-improved sanitation environment at school. Each toilet block will have guttering on it and a 2,000-litre tank where students can wash their hands.
What we need now is for Rotary Clubs to partner with us to achieve this. Thus, we are reaching out to our Rotary family and asking for clubs to make a $500 donation towards our cause.
100% of donations go directly towards projects and we prove where your money goes via photos and videos. Clubs are also given recognition through names on a plaque.
I have attached a document about BeyondWater and you can find more information about the 2022 Pedal Against Poverty tour HERE.
On behalf of Founders, Pete and Sharon Crean, thank you for considering investing into our project.
Welcome to Term 4 everyone. What a busy but great planting season it has been for us here at Trees for Survival. After a couple of rather turbulent years, we were pleased that this year's planting season went ahead smoothly. Well, as smoothly as organising over 130 plantings with 4,000 students can be :) We look forward to sharing our final plant count with you soon!
We would like to extend a huge THANK YOU to everyone who contributed to making 2022 another successful planting year: Our programme facilitators put a lot of effort into 'behind the scenes' preparing and organising as well as spending long days out in the field in all kinds of weather conditions - a big thank you to our fantastic facilitator team!
And of course, the same goes for all our dedicated TfS schools, landowners, volunteers and partners who make Trees for Survival what it is - a community of keen planters and learners who are creating pockets of native bush across New Zealand to improve the quality of our waterways and to restore and protect environmentally at-risk land so that native wildlife, people and the environment can thrive!
Thank you all so much!

The Waiau Pa Bulk Haulage Trucks
If you travel through Auckland, you may have been lucky to catch a glimpse of one of Waiau Pa Bulk Haulage's 'Trees for Survival trucks'. We're so proud of our partnership with Waiau Pa Bulk Haulage and the awesome messages their trucks are spreading whilst on the road.
We have seen one of the trucks drive past during a school planting day this winter. While there wasn't enough time to take a photo, it was still really special to see the truck drive past. If you also see it out and about and if you can safely take a photo of it, send it to us as we'd love to see your photos and hear where you have seen them.
A message from the team at Waiau Pa Bulk Haulage:
"Waiau Pa Bulk Haulage Ltd (WPBH) are a new sponsor to Trees for Survival having jumped on board in 2021; we saw the community and environmental benefits for supporting this Trust and decided to support big (in the way only a trucking company can do!). In the next few weeks, we will have our fourth truck and trailer with the “Trees For Survival” wrap on the road. We have had a really positive response to the trucks with many people stopping us and letting us know that they have seen them driving around Auckland. We have been lucky to have had two school plantings so far, with a massive 2,130 plants planted so far on our farm. WPBH are looking forward to our ongoing support of Trees for Survival :)"
