The Presidents Pen

Co-Presidents St. Johns Rotary, Gary Key (Ph: 021 611169), and Graham Fabian (Ph: 021 826292).

Greetings fellow Rotarians, and thank you to those of you who attended our Breakfast Meeting on Thursday, as it was our assigned Committee Meeting,  i.e. Community and Youth, Science and Environment and Club Services.

We also took the opportunity to hear from Club Member Stuart McEwen, who gave us an in-depth overview of his Leadership through Basketball programs which he has successfully run through our local School community for the last couple of years.  There is a real opportunity to look at developing a local court within our Parish to help foster 3x3 competition.  We appreciate that this is very much still within the embryonic stage, but is worth further discussion - thank you Stuart.

We are rapidly coming to the end of the year!! Remember we have the Stonefield Residents Market day this coming Sunday 27th 1000 –1330 and Muriel is still looking for some volunteers.

District Conference March 31st to April 1st 2023. To all members we need you to register for this event.  For any Rotary Club it is an honour to have the District Governor as a member, but, there is also the responsibility of the Club to financially underwrite the District Governor Conference  To date we have less than 8 members registered - so just to make it crystal clear, “Looking in the Mirror“ it is the expectation of your Co-Presidents that every member, all 52 plus partners, register for the Conference - we need your total support!!!

Thanks and Regards

Meeting In Review - Nov 17th 2022
In Sergeant Patrick's absence, stand in Sergeant John Cornaga introduced Co President Gary who chaired the meeting, leading off with club notices from Treasurer and Directors:

Co-Chairman / Treasurer  Graham, formally gave notice of the upcoming AGM which will be held during this week's breakfast meeting on Thursday November 24th.  This AGM relates to the Rotary Year ending June 30, 2022.  Please see further details on AGM below.

While on his feet - Graham updated members on some financial data;
  • The club funds are close to breaking-even thanks to the additional "room hire" levy now being collected on a regular basis,
  • Due to the success of the Quiz Night the club is again back in a good financial position and able to meet the costs of our Youth Programme commitments,
  • Club members have committed to donating $4,150 to the Rotary Foundation.  This amount will be topped-up by the club to enable a total club contribution of $6,000.
  • The club has also donated $1,000 to the latest End Polio Now event, being the Ride The Train event earlier this month.
Director Environment - Peter B thanked all who participated in last week's Apirana Reserve Working Bee, which consisted of moving recently delivered mulch around recent plantings.

Directors Youth & Community - Liz & Kevin
  • Thanks was extended to all members who participated in the Ruapotaka School sand-pit project.
  • The club now only has 6 Xmas Puddings left to sell this year.  If you have not already purchased one, please contact Christie or Kevin asap.
  • We will shortly be presenting winning schools with the Junior Citizen awards and Kevin & Liz are looking for members to volunteer to represent St Johns Rotary at the upcoming year-end prize-giving events.
Directors Club Services - Penny & Lesley -  advised all is well, but we are on the hunt for guest speakers to talk at meetings next year.  Any ideas to either Penny or Lesley.

Other notices and updates of various activities are covered off later in this Bulletin.

Guest Speaker, Stuart McEwan:

Stuart is a new member and was keen to share with club members more details about his role in the community with YBNZ, (Youth Basketball New Zealand).

Basketball is currently the second most popular sport played by secondary school pupils in New Zealand, and next year it is expected to be number one and accordingly YBNZ will be focusing on school basketball programmes for these students.

Stuart also wanted to thank St Johns Rotary for the support over the past two years which he hopes this will continue again next year,

A very informative talk which lead into a good Q & A and it was apparent from the discussion following that there would be support from club members for the RCSTJ to get more involved, and the Board will work with members and Stuart to explore what these could be.

Members who missed the talk and presentation are encouraged to contact Stuart should they require additional information.

Following Stuart's talk there was still time for very brief Committee Meetings and below are summaries of the meeting notes;

Liz & Kevin - Community and Youth:
  • The Schools Citizenship Awards: people are happy to help out and attend these at schools when they are able, depending on the dates
  • Xmas pudding drive: Please contact Christie, or in his absence Kevin, if you can take a pudding or two off our hands.  Huge thanks to Christie for his ongoing commitment to this money maker for the club.
  • Dictionaries in Schools: this is likely to be caught up at the beginning of next year, as well as end of 2023 school year.
Penny & Lesley - Club Services:
  • All club members are encouraged to suggest guest speakers for next year.
  • The last meeting for the year will be a Breakfast Meeting on December 8th
  • The first meeting in 2023 will be a Breakfast Meeting on February 2nd
  • The first Dinner Meeting in 2023 will be on February 9th.
Peter B - Environment:
  • No new activity planned for this year, but watch for news of new activity in the new year!

This is a very special thanks to St. Johns Rotary who did such a wonderful job on Saturday.

A great team effort.

We really appreciate all of the hard work that your fellow members contributed to make this wonderful asset and our students will enjoy playing in the sand pit for many years to come.

We will be having a special opening which you and your fellow members will be invited to, so look out for that invitation.

It was a pleasure to work with you and your team.  I also understand that we are to pay for the sand so please forward the invoice to myself at your earliest convenience.

New Club Promotion Cards For All To Use
The club cards have been a success to date, if maybe a little boring.  We have changed our club emails away from gmail to match our website address necessitating a revision and the cards are now more colourful, and double-sided as shown here and will be available from the club boxes at the Golf Club cupboard from 25 November.  At EVERY project, please have some available to hand out.  All members are encouraged to have a couple in your wallet to hand to people who may be interested in Rotary St Johns.
St. Johns Rotary / New World Annual Golf Tournament:

D9920 Annual Conference
Friday 31 March - Saturday 1st April 2023

Rotary St Johns, your club, is responsible for hosting this important event so your support is needed by coming along for a great time.  The programme is still being finalised but so far it is a wonderful mix of social/networking events and incredibly inspiring speakers.  Being close to home it is easy to get to, and the venue is impressive as anyone who has been to Karaka Bloodstock will attest to.  So register your place today, especially as you will want to get along to the full programme (Friday night dinner is limited to the first 120 registrants).

Friday: Foundation Dinner and charity auction
Saturday: Conference
Saturday: Past District Governor Cocktail Hour
Saturday: Awards Dinner

More details regarding programme, guest speakers, registration etc. will be shared over the coming weeks, but in the meantime, ensure that you have these dates in your diary.

WATCH THIS SPACE for more information as speakers and the conference programme are confirmed.

A Chance For The Holiday You Deserve
The number of sales continues to grow, but the clock is ticketing and the time to sell all tickets is closing in!

To date we have sold over 115 tickets, but there are still plenty to be sold.  Most of the unsold tickets are in books distributed to members, but details of sales have not yet been captured.

If you are sitting on tickets yet to be sold - now is the time that we need you to turn unsold tickets into "SOLD"

To those members who have sold tickets - thank you!  To those who have not yet sold all tickets in your possession - closing a sale now and returning payment to Miles would be much appreciated.

This is an important fundraiser for the club so we need everybody to get behind this.

Many thanks

Miles Cain;  cainmandm@gmail.com

Time For A Smile
Peter B was charged with the Close at last weeks meeting and rather than close with a deep thought provoking quote, instead he came up with a couple of other quotes very relevant to the Committee Meetings having just been held.  Both quotes are from  the American comedian, the late Fred Allen:

"Committee - a group of people who individually can do nothing but as a group decide that nothing can be done."

and

"Committee - a group of the unprepared, appointed by the unwilling, to do the unnecessary."

Thanks for sharing Peter
