We will be having an onsite meeting this Thursday at the Golf Club, with the appropriate safety precautions. I know I am looking forward to catching up with everyone after being away for the last weeks. Please RSVP to Robyn so that we can get the number right.
I have had some additional feedback around Foundation Donations. Every year we ask members to voluntarily donate $150 to foundation. What we were hoping for is that members who would normally opt out would use the money not spent on Thursday breakfast towards their foundation donation. Apologies for the confusion. If you would like to donate more than the $150 that would also be greatly appreciated.
I met up with Graeme from GI Food Bank on Saturday morning and he would like to extend his appreciation to the RCoSJ and New World for the generous donations. We are making a small, but significant impact in our local community – congratulations!
Yes, as President Hugh has mentioned above, we are going back home to the Remuera Golf Club for this Thursday's Meeting - September 17th.
The Golf Club are now able to offer us a Socially-distanced option to meet for Breakfast with spaced tables; maximum of five per table; controlled buffet with server, etc.
As noted below, we have an In House speaker this week (Brian Fergus), keen to regale us with his travel exploits from last year.
Come along and enjoy the fellowship you have been missing (and the crispy bacon)!
To ensure correct numbers are catered for, can you please email RSVP to IPP Robyn.
Unfortunately we were still not permitted to meet face to face, and although not ideal, last weeks meeting was once again held on Zoom, regrettably with a declining number of participants. Only 14 members, 3 guests and four official apologies. For those who did participate, they enjoyed good online fellowship and, of course, listened to our guest speaker, Shirin Brown - Labour Candidate for Tamaki.
Murray introduced Shirin who was very quick to sincerely thank St Johns for inviting her to attend our meeting. Shirin was born in Iran and arrived in New Zealand in 2000 on a working visa, with a professional background in Education and Film Making. For the last 6 years she has been the local board member for Waiheke.
She has been a member of the New Zealand Labour Party for several years and in 2019, impressed with the way the country was being run, she put her name forward to represent Labour in the upcoming election, and as they say, the rest is history.
Other interests she has include;
Being an advocate for small business,
She is the Chair for Forest and Bird - Waiheke,
Supporting families and reducing poverty
Equity and social justice.
Following her introductory comments and touching on her primary interests, the floor was opened for question. There were a good number of questions on a wide range of subjects, to name a few;
Poverty issues,
Motutapu and the current restrictions on planting,
The impact of COVID-19 on the lower socio economic population,
Tamaki re-development,
Iwi involvement in local projects,
Apprenticeship programmes,
and many others
Following the meeting, Shirin sent the email below, (to view click on "Read More"). She also attached information on the Discussion series that she refers to in her email.
THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 17th - Breakfast Meeting, Venue Remuera Golf Club / Time 7.00 am for 7.15 am.
Brian Fergus will share with us details of his Queen Mary cruise late last year. Following Brian's presentation, we will move into Project/Committee meetings. Please do all you can to attend to ensure your thoughts on the way ahead for our club are shared.
THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 24th - Breakfast Meeting, Venue Remuera Golf Club/ Time 7.00am for 7.15am.
The quality and diverse nature of our guest speakers continues, with this week's speaker being, Dr. Bodo Lang and his talk is titled "Don't Sugar Coat It".
Sugar used to be our sweet heart. Not anymore. Sugar has been implicated in a variety of diseases with grim consequences for individual health, productivity, and health costs. This talk aims to inform, educate and even entertain the audience about sugar, its perils and how easy it is to reduce sugar consumption.
Dr. Lang has worked as a Lecturer in the marketing department at the University of Auckland Business School; as an Academic Director and Senior Lecturer at the Manukau Institute of Technology; and he is currently a Senior Lecturer and Deputy Head of Department (Marketing) at the University of Auckland Business School. He is a passionate teacher and has received two teaching awards and has sustained excellence for nearly two decades of teaching.
THURSDAY OCTOBER 1st - Dinner and Fellowship Evening at the Club!
This fellowship event will replace our weekly meeting and is open to Members, Partners, Family & Friends. Come and have a go on the driving range at our home-base, Remuera Golf Club, followed by a delicious fish and chips meal at Winstones, or possibly better known at the 19th.
This is a fun event, and as observed last year, is suitable for all abilities, (or complete lack of ability). Those not wishing to swing a club are invited to observe the fun, or take the opportunity to have a catch-up chat in the bar.
Further details will be advised via future Bulletin. An RSVPs will be required, so please diary now. Its been a while since we had a good social event so more the merrier.
Last week Miles had the pleasure of catching up with Donald at his new club in Taupo and as can be seen in the pictures that Miles has submitted, Donald looks happy enough and he has already had his name badge made!
