Co-Presidents St. Johns Rotary, Penny McGarry (Ph: 021 702 310), and Lesley Harris (Ph: 027 4935 498).

Good Evening All,

Back to "abnormal / normal" it seemed as we held our Zoom meeting last Thursday morning.

19 members plus 4 guests signed-in including DG Steve Chaney, his wife Edith, ADG Ashwini Sadhu and

Sue Smith, our very own DG elect Allan Smith's wife.

Sadly Steve wasn't well and left early, we have wished him well and will invite him back at a later date.

It was lovely to see Avi ( moved to Wellington ) and Prabbha ( currently in Melbourne ) join us.

Claire Lucas gave us an update on Onja. Excitingly 4 graduates are now employed.

We lamented cancelled events, didn't have the usual breakfast, but did enjoy the fellowship.

Who knows when we will meet at the Golf Course again, we will keep you posted.  In the meantime stay safe, take care and follow the rules!

"Zoom" Meeting in Review - July 19th 2021
"Zoom is Back!!

Last week a total of 19 members and 4 guests signed in to our first Zoom Meeting of the year, and regrettably it is likely more Zoom Meetings lie ahead of us.

We will keep you advised via email and the Bulletin as to what the meeting format each week will be.

At this meeting District Governor Steve Chaney was scheduled to address us and bring us up to speed with District plans and aspirations for the new Rotary year.

Unfortunately just as he was about to speak Steve started to feel unwell and decided it was best if he left the meeting. He extended his apologies to all and we hope that you are feeling much better now Steve and we look forward to your next visit which hopefully will be a face to face encounter!!

Also visiting the club last week was ADG  Ashwini Sadhu and in Steve's absence she took the opportunity to introduce herself.  Ashwini immigrated to New Zealand from Fiji in 1995 and is currently a member of the Harbourside Rotary Club.  Although she hasn't had the opportunity to visit our club before, she is well aware of the good work we do and knows that we are a strong and healthy club.  However, if there is ever any help we need from District we must not hesitate to contact her.

Following the discussion with Ashwini DG Elect Allan updated the club on how Fiji is coping with Covid19 and regrettably, as Allan has advised us in the past, it is not a good story.  District are, of course, very aware of the huge challenges that they are facing and are continuing to do what they can to support the Fijian Rotary Clubs and our fellow Rotarians.

As we still had time available, Claire was then invited to update the meeting on the latest happenings in Madagascar and with ONJA.  There are now four Graduates working in semi-permanent roles, but finding full time work is proving challenging.  There could well be opportunities for New Zealand Companies taking advantage of the need for Software Developers and Claire ensured us that the price would be good.  So if any members know of anyone who may be looking for Software Developers, at the right price, please put them in touch with Claire as soon as possible.  Such an introduction could be a win win for all.

Prior to our Zoom meeting coming to an end, our Co-Presidents reminded all members, subject to Covid restrictions, that our Quiz night is still scheduled to go ahead on Friday September 24th, and tickets are being purchased, so to be sure of getting your own table confirmed, now would be a good time to sign up.  We are also still looking for sponsors and auction items so if you think that you can help in this regard please do not hesitate to contact Penny or Lesley.

The meeting wound-up at 8.30am and, as already advised, an email will be sent to all members early this week confirming the status of our meeting on August 26th.
Club Meetings and Other Important Dates
THURSDAY AUGUST 26th - Breakfast Meeting - Possibly via Zoom, with guest speaker Oscar Lyons.
It is looking good for us to hear from St. Johns Member Oscar, who is currently based in London.  If we are unable to secure Oscar, details of our guest speaker will be provided via email early this week once we know what Covid Level restrictions we will be operating under.

MONDAY AUGUST 30th - Dinner Meeting - Club Visit to the Rotary Club of Remuera - Guest Speaker; Allie Mooney - "PRESSING THE RIGHT BUTTONS".  This meeting will be at the Remuera Club venue:  Carlton Cornwall Bowling Club, 126 Market Rd, Epsom.  RSVP's essential and to Robyn please: robyn.ingram@outlook.com This meeting will be in-lieu of our regular club meeting on September 2nd.

NOTE: Subject to Covid Restrictions there may well be a change to this meeting.  Please watch for email advice accordingly.

Ever wondered why you instantly ‘click’ with some people and feel as though you have been friends for life, yet there are some who can rub you up the wrong way – sometimes before they even open their mouth!

Ever given thought to how you could get on better with the people you work with?  What about that person you share a life with today is actually the same person you married?

And then there is the kids – even though they have been raised in the same home – can be so completely different?  Every day the roads are filled with different people heading in different directions with different goals in mind, yet all of us drive smoothly along with few mishaps because we all understand some common laws: we stop at stop signs and red lights, we go on green, and we try to follow the speed limit.

However in our relationships, both in the workplace and at home, we seem to have a few more bumps. We wish we could straighten out all those other people – those very same people who want to straighten us out!

Regardless of your upbringing, genetics or circumstances the key is knowing and understanding our differences.

Come for a fun and entertaining evening with New Zealand’s most acclaimed professional award winning speaker Allison Mooney. You will discover specific keys can enhance your life. And you will see how to truly enrich the partnerships with workmates your  family,  and all of those you come in contact with – all in a simple, unique and fun way.

This meeting will be at their Club:  Carlton Cornwall Bowling Club, 126 Market Rd, Epsom.  RSVP's essential and to Robyn please: robyn.ingram@outlook.com.

EARLY ADVICE OF CHANGE TO OUR SEPTEMBER ACTIVITY CALENDAR:

  • Instead of our scheduled meeting on September 23rd we will defer by one day and have our QUIZ night on Friday September 24th.  Note Change of Date.  Our annual Quiz night is a major fundraising event for the club, so now is a good time to ensure this date is in your diary, and booking your table of 10.  Single tickets are available at $35 each or $300 for a table of 10.
"Correction" - Glendowie College Interact Club Doing Good in the Community
The following story appeared in last weeks Bulletin, but referred to the Glendowie College Rotaract Club, when in fact the project was completed by the Glendowie College Interact Club - apologies are extended to the Glendowie Interact Club for this error;

Last week, our resident Handymen, Aubrey and Miles, were on hand at the Glendowie Community Centre at Crossfields Reserve, to install the AED pictured.

This AED was funded by the Glendowie College Interact Club from previously raised funds.

Also pictured is Vee Samuel, Manager of the Community Centre who along with St. Johns Rotary extended their thanks to the Interact Club and congratulated them on funding this potential life saving Defibrillator.
Rotary Leadership Institute

Just for you, Rotary Leadership Institute has been adapted for lockdown - join in.

Well, we never know what is around the corner, but as Rotarians we are experienced at seizing opportunities!

You will have seen in the District Newsletter, an invitation to participate in RLI (Rotary Leadership Institute), now scheduled for September.

Given the uncertainty of current lockdown circumstances, we can use our planned programme as an opportunity for our Rotarians and Rotaractors to connect, share ideas and consider how we can support our clubs and members.  This will also enable our Pacific Island clubs to attend.

We will only offer the online component of the programme at this time, and when the community situation is more certain, we will look at when and where we later deliver the face to face day.

We will run the programme over 3 online sessions for 60-90 minutes each time.  There will also be some preparatory learning through the Learning Center on myrotary.org. If you do these modules, you will be well prepared to participate in the discussions during our online sessions as these will be discussion-based.

The pre-learning we ask you to complete is:
Complete 4 modules in the Learning Center: Rotary Basics; Foundation Basics; Rotary’s Areas of Focus; The Rotary Brand.
Each module takes between 15 and 45 minutes to complete.
Before you start you need to make sure you have a My Rotary account and know how to log on to the Learning Center.

To create an account click on following Link:  https://portal.clubrunner.ca/50161/Documents/en-au/580c0b6d-ef37-4078-b4c9-da6ebb43b1ad/1/

The link to the Learning Center is https://learn.rotary.org/members/pages/36/course-catalogs .Then click on General for the first 3 suggested modules and Public Image for The Rotary Brand module.  You will probably find while you are there that there are others you will want to explore.

The three online sessions will be:

Session 1 – 3 x 30 mins – Wednesday September 1, 7-8.30pm
- Introductions and overview of the program
- Leadership in Rotary
- Foundation 1: Our Foundation

Session 2 – 3 x 30 mins - Wednesday September 15, 7-8.30pm
- My Rotary World and Rotary Resources
- Rotary Opportunities
- Foundation 2: Targeted Service

Session 3 – 2 x 30 mins - Wednesday September 29, 7-8.30pm
- Ethics & Vocational Service ( 4-Way Test)
- Engaging Members

Whether you are new to Rotary or Rotaract, new to your current club role or just want to get up to date, there is something for you.  See the attached outline of the programme via the following link;   https://portal.clubrunner.ca/50161/Documents/en-au/dea4060d-c115-4299-9477-6bac53c834c4/1/

So please register now to join with your fellow Rotarians to learn about Rotary, make connections and think about how you can make a difference .  To register please complete the District 9920 RLI Registration Form accessible via the following link; https://portal.clubrunner.ca/50161/Documents/en-au/630c2e00-c30c-4ae0-803d-ba327581760c/1/ , or feel free to call  Beryl on 021 652 802.

We look forward to seeing you online.

Call Out for Guest Speaker Ideas
Have you noticed 'TBA' in the Upcoming Speaker list?  Well, it's not there to create mystery and suspense!  TBA generally means we are having difficulty securing a speaker for that date.  If you have any ideas, hints or leads for possible Guest Speakers for our morning and evening meetings, please let your Club Services Director (Robyn) know.

All topics are considered, but it must be remembered that we don't have a budget to pay for professional speakers - although our gift tea-towel is very highly prized!  In special circumstances (and usually with prior permission) the Sergeants collection can be especially allocated.

I look forward to any hints to add to our contact list.

Cheers and Many Thanks
