The President's Pen

Hi All,

Fantastic result! -  our first fundraiser for the year went spectacularly with the Annual Quiz Night raising well over $9,000!  Thank-you to the organizing committee, especially Donald who championed the event, our sponsors, and those who gave generously to the silent auction.  Everyone had a fun evening.

I have checked my 2121 Challenge Scorecard and am well on track to achieving my goal. How is everyone else tracking? I was thinking that my biggest challenge would be to bring a potential member to breakfast, but after the Quiz Night a couple of my teammates were really interested in what
Rotary does! Watch this space.

As many of you know The Donald will be moving to Taupo in the near future, but he has reassured us that he will visit regularly.  RCoSJ's loss will be a huge gain for the Rotary Club he will be joining in Taupo.  We have something special arranged for Donald on Thursday so please join us for breakfast.

Take care and see you on Thursday.

Quiz Night - A Great Success!!
As mentioned in President Hugh's words above, the Club Quiz Night held last Friday evening was a great success with the net funds raised knocking on the door of $10,000!  This amount will go a long way to support our Rotary Youth Projects and the significant number of Community based activities that our club are involved with.

It was great to see Rotarians from other clubs present and supporting the event, including Auckland Rotoractors.  Many thanks for your support and we hope that you enjoyed the evening.

A huge thank you also to;
  • Donald and his team for the organisation of the evening;
  • To all club members and their friends and families for their attendance and for supporting the event and being so generous with their support of the silent auction, raffles, refreshments, and other opportunities presented on the night;
  • To our Sponsors as pictured below;
  • To other donors / sponsors of prizes for the silent auction, namely: Isabella, Penny McGarry, the Leyland Family, Alan & Sue Smith, Michele Mann, Lynette and Muriel;
  • To Chris H and Glen Taylor School;
The following pictures capture some of the action on the night;

  • The Setup;
  • The Quizzers eagerly and patiently awaiting the first question;
  • Miles keeping a close eye on the Silent Auction activity;
  • Miles & Aubrey endeavouring to entice David to become an active bidder;
  • The all important sponsors;
  • ....And the Quiz Winning Table was - "The Terminators"!!!  A great prize for the winning team, beautifully constructed and donated by Isabella - thanks again Isabella.

Rotary Club of St Johns to the Rescue (Again)
Our connection with CAB Glen Innes has helped to assist yet another local family.

This time, Plunket (with offices right next door to CAB GI) introduced a struggling family to the services of the CAB.  The Plunket contact was able to indicate that she had been to the family home many times and they had ‘nothing’.

Plunket are able to assist with some clothing for very young children and babies – but wondered if someone could help source some warm clothes for two of the older children.

We had money left over from helping the previous two families – so it was super to advise Patsy that once again – we could come to the rescue.

Our thanks to Helen Stephens for making time to shop for some brand new, appropriately sized and warm clothing for these children.  Plunket is working closely with the family and will be delighted to deliver them.
Club Visit to Rotoroa Island
As mentioned in last weeks Bulletin, a club visit to Rotoroa Island in the Hauraki Gulf was being considered.  This is now a reality.  You should have received the following e-mail directly from Peter Buchanan, but just in case you missed it, here is a copy....

Dear RCSJ Member,

Ever been to Rotoroa Island, east of Waiheke Is. and an hour by ferry from Downtown?  Well St Johns Rotary Members have got the chance to go on a "Volunteer Working Weekend" group - helping with weeding, etc while enjoying the beauty and native biodiversity of this special island, now being restored.

We need to book well ahead as there's a big demand by volunteer groups, to visit and to help.  Numbers are limited to beds available in the 3 holiday homes.

Costs:   As volunteers, we receive a discounted rate on the Fullers ferry (usually $55 return, reduced to $33).
The biggest cost will be the Qualmark 4-star accommodation (about $100 pp pn) - see details on https://www.rotoroa.org.nz/accommodation. Unit prices listed on the website are based on 4, 4, and 8 adults respectively in Oranga, Mahoe, and Serenity holiday homes. (NB. The Superintendent's House is already fully booked by others).

Take own food and drink; there's no shop on the island.

Dates:
  • 27 Nov. (Friday)  Depart Auckland by Ferry (Fullers 360 Discovery) late afternoon - time to be advised
  • 27 and 28 Nov.  Stay 2 nights in 3 "Holiday Homes" See: https://www.rotoroa.org.nz/accommodation
  • 29 Nov. (Sunday)  Depart Rotoroa Is. late afternoon - time to be advised
For more details about Rotoroa Island, see: https://www.rotoroa.org.nz/experience

For more details about ferry transport & island attractions, see: https://www.fullers.co.nz/destinations/rotoroa-island/  Note that over winter the ferry does not go to Rotoroa, and the spring timetable is not yet listed.

Other things to bring:
  • Good walking shoes, sun block and a sun hat.
  • Swimming gear and a towel during summer.
  • Plenty of water, snacks and lunch in sealed, rodent-proof containers. There is no food for sale on the island! If staying overnight it is wise to bring enough food for an extra day in case the boat is cancelled due to bad weather.
  • A rain jacket, depending on the time of year and conditions.
  • There are no rubbish bins on pest-free islands. Please remember to take all your rubbish, including leftover food, off the island with you.
BookingsPlease contact me to reserve your place - by Friday 14 August, so that I can advise the Rotoroa Is. Trust Manager.

Kind regards,
Peter Buchanan  (for Environment & Science Committee)

Guest Speaker Ideas!
Our Club Services Director is doing a great job securing Guest Speakers for our weekly meetings.  However, these speakers do not appear without a significant amount of research and followup and, of course, we want interesting speakers for our members.

You should have received the email below from IPP Robyn, but as a reminder, please think about how you can assist and any ideas, thoughts to Robyn please

Dear SJRC Members,

Any ideas or leads for guest speakers would be gratefully received by your Club Services Team.

We currently have speakers scheduled until November but are particularly keen to secure a great speaker for the evening of Thursday 5 November.

All successful leads for AM or PM speakers will be rewarded with a ChocolateFish!

Cheers
Robyn Ingram

Time for a Smile!
Tiger Woods and Stevie Wonder were chatting at a party when Stevie mentioned to Tiger that he was a keen golfer.
            “Come on,” said Tiger. “ Don’t tell me you play golf?  You’re blind?”
            “Oh, that’s not really a problem,“ replied Stevie.
“Really? How come?” asked Tiger.
“I just get my caddy to run out to the fairway and call out to me.  I hit the ball towards him.  Then he moves closer to the green and yells out again and I just keep hitting the ball towards him and roughly where the hole is?”
            “Wow.  But how do you get on for putting?” Tiger asked.
            “No problem there either. My caddy lies down next to the hole with his mouth open and calls out.  Then I simply putt the ball towards the sound he makes”
            “Amazing.” said Tiger. “what handicap are you on?”
            “I play off scratch, “said Stevie. “Nowhere as good as you, of course – but not too bad, considering.“
            “That’s incredible, “said Tiger.  “We should have a game sometime?”
            “I don’t know, “replied Stevie. “ People don’t take me seriously when I say I play golf, so I’ve decided I won’t play anyone unless its for a minimum of ten thousand dollars.”
Tiger is in a quandary.  He’d like to play but thinks he will have too much of an advantage.  But after a little deliberation he comes to the conclusion that Stevie is a rich man and wouldn’t really miss ten thousand dollars.
So, to avoid hurting his feelings, he agrees.
            “OK, “said Tiger. “ You’re on.  When would you like to play?”
            “I’m easy” said Stevie.  “Pick a night.”

Have a wonderful week with many *smiles*.
