Joint meet with RC Remuera - Speaker Allie Mooney 'Pressing the Right Buttons'
Aug 30, 2021 5:30 PM
PRESSING THE RIGHT BUTTONS Ever wondered why you instantly ‘click’ with some people and feel as though you have been friends for life, yet there are some who can rub you up the wrong way – sometimes before they even open their mouth! Ever given thought to how you could get on better with the people you work with? What about that person you share a life with today is actually the same person you married? And then there is the kids – even though they have been raised in the same home – can be so completely different? Every day the roads are filled with different people heading in different directions with different goals in mind, yet all of us drive smoothly along with few mishaps because we all understand some common laws: we stop at stop signs and red lights, we go on green, and we try to follow the speed limit. However in our relationships, both in the workplace and at home, we seem to have a few more bumps. We wish we could straighten out all those other people – those very same people who want to straighten us out! Regardless of your upbringing, genetics or circumstances the key is knowing and understanding our differences. Come for a fun and entertaining evening with New Zealand’s most acclaimed professional award winning speaker Allison Mooney. You will discover specific keys can enhance your life. And you will see how to truly enrich the partnerships with workmates your family, and all of those you come in contact with – all in a simple, unique and fun way. Combining the Rotary Club of Remuera, this meeting will be at their Club: Carlton Cornwall Bowling Club, 126 Market Rd, Epsom. RSVP's essentail and to Robyn please: robyn.ingram@outlook.com |

Rotary Reading Enrichment Programme (REP)
Sep 23, 2021 7:00 AM
Do you know about the Rotary Reading Enrichment Programme (REP)? REP is a programme that has been running for 20 years – but somewhat under the radar! It aspires to raise student literacy levels by offering professionally supervised one-on-one sessions with students, at set times, and worked within the school timetable. The programme was set up at One Tree Hill College by past principal Ann Dunphy and businessman Harvey Alison, representing the Penrose Rotary Club. Students are paired with volunteer reading tutors, who give up their time to coach students to help them with basic literacy principles and gain more understanding (and therefore more enjoyment and motivation to read) from the texts they work on. REP is now offered at seven high school. Our club member Alex Gatt has been a Tutor for this programme for many years and can’t speak more highly of it. This week we are delighted that Ann Dunphy will be joining us to tell us about the programme, along with Libby Barrett who has been the volunteer-REP coordinator at One Tree Hill College for 20 years; and our own club member Alex Gatt will also share his experience as a Tutor there. |

New Zealand’s Housing Crisis: An overview of the real stats and state of housing in NZ
Oct 07, 2021 7:00 PM
An overview of the real stats and state of housing in New Zealand, and a discussion on some of the solutions needed to tackle New Zealand’s greatest social crisis since the Great Depression. James Palmer, BA, LLB - Chief Executive, Community Finance and Christian Savings. Christian Savings is New Zealand’s only registered charity that is also licensed by the Reserve Bank of New Zealand as a non-bank deposit taker. Christian Savings manages over $225m, with over $180m in loans to a range of not-for-profits and Community Housing Providers. James identified a need to grow impact investing to help meet New Zealand’s significant housing crisis. He founded and launched Community Finance in 2019. Community Finance is now New Zealand’s largest open impact investment intermediary established to facilitate investment into affordable housing. The core focus is on permanent solutions delivered by reputable organisations who are equipped to take care of our most vulnerable New Zealanders. Community Finance has already advanced over $50 million to Community Housing Providers such as The Salvation Army and Community of Refuge Trust. In 2021, Community Finance launched the Aotearoa Pledge to raise an additional $100m for impact investing through the housing sector. By April 2021, $71m had already been pledged from a range of fund managers, KiwiSaver providers and community trusts and foundations. At the Institute of Financial Professionals of New Zealand Gala event in May, James won the coveted Emerging Leader Award for 2021. |

Living With Volcanoes
Nov 18, 2021 7:30 AM
The study of volcanoes and their eruptions has taken on renewed significance over the last 40 years as major eruptions around the world have impacted communities and disrupted patterns of human activity. In parallel with that, there has been an extraordinary development of techniques focused on understanding of how volcanoes work and how the potentially dangerous impact of their eruptions can be mitigated. Ian’s research has focused on volcanoes of the ’Pacific rim of fire’ particularly the southwest Pacific islands and New Zealand. Dr Ian Smith has worked as volcanologist at the Central Volcanological Observatory in Rabaul, Papua New Guinea. He then took up a research fellowship at the University of Toronto in Canada studying some of the oldest volcanic rocks on the planet and their role in the formation of the Earth’s early crust. In 1980 Ian began a teaching position at the University of Auckland where he remained until retirement. |

Rocket Lab Ambassador
Dec 02, 2021 7:00 PM
Sarah Blyde is a project engineer at Rocket Lab, a space company that builds and launches the Electron rocket in New Zealand. Sarah grew up in Auckland and went on to study engineering at the University of Auckland before moving to Western Australia to work as a petroleum engineer. While there, she became fascinated by the growing space industry and decided she wanted to be part of all the action so went to France to do a masters degree in space studies. The pandemic kicked off halfway through and she came home to New Zealand to finish her studies remotely before ending up with her dream job at Rocket Lab! Space isn't her only passion though - you'll often find Sarah out training for her next marathon, on the water kiteboarding, or hiking up a mountain somewhere. |
