The Presidents Pen

Co-Presidents St. Johns Rotary, Gary Key (Ph: 021 611169), and Graham Fabian (Ph: 021 826292).

Dear Fellow Rotarians,

We have all felt the loss of the very sad passing of Michele, and our thoughts are with Eddie and the extended Family.  As advised, the Memorial service will be held on April 5th 12-30pm All Saints Chapel, Purewa.

On Thursday morning we had a wonderful presentation by the three Students who attended the Science Forum.  More coverage by Editor Peter below.  What a privilege it was to hear their experiences—to those Rotarians who did not make the Meeting, you really did miss something very special.

A huge thank you, again, to Graham and David and all the members involved for such a fantastic result with our Golf Tournament.

Have a great week.

Regards
G&G

Stories
Obituary - Hon. Rotarian and Benefactor Michele Mann.
Honorary Rotarian Michele Mann joined St Johns Rotary one average morning on 8 May, back in 2006, and sadly left us on Monday, 20 March, having spent her last days in Respite Care at Dove Hospice, which was one of many organisations she supported.
There will be a Memorial Service on – Wednesday 5 April, All Saints Chapel, Purewa Cemetery, 12 for 12.30 – to reflect on her generosity and the wide-ranging institutions and individuals she supported.

Today we remember a Rotarian colleague, friend and presence who could delight with her artistic talent, motivate with drive, determination and enthusiasm, while partying and mingling with equanimity and purpose.  Many will recall the “fish & chips” evenings in the Mann’s lovely Long Drive home.

She first raised eyebrows by joining Alex McKenzie, PP, Honorary Rotarian and another irresistible force, doing reading with pupils at Glen Taylor School, an institution she grew to love and support in every way, until her untimely death.  Recalls principal Chris Herlihy: “Michele loved coming to events at the school. Whether it was an assembly, prize-giving or any other event, Michele so enjoyed and expressed her joy supporting the kids at GTS.  “On the odd occasion, I would forget to invite Michele to an event. That was the wrong thing to do!”

She had created her own business, Care Cookies, previously and brought the idea of Rotary co-ordinating a Great Kiwi Anzac Day Breakfast, after seeing the growing number of younger generation attendees at the Dawn Service. She believed this would provide an occasion, post-dawn service, for Rotarians to invite family and friends into their homes to reflect on the importance of the day and raise funds to support the upkeep of memorials and / or general well-being of ex-servicemen, when it became clear that municipal regulations would impede and frustrate the original idea.

Each year the club honours and celebrates that ideal. Michele received a Paul Harris Fellowship Award, early on, for her passion, under-writing and mobilising efforts.

But her true love was to be Dictionaries in Schools.  Her husband, Eddie, would be enlisted to fetch a couple of hundred dictionaries which she would personalise to each youngster, in her artistic hand, from up to 10 primary schools in the Tamaki area. But that was just the initial preparation.  Murray, possibly Aubrey, Miles, and Kevin had the pleasure of accompanying her to photograph these special events.  These were not occasions to dole out books and pat youngsters on the head.  No way. Michele would give a short pep-talk on the importance of language and being able to communicate.  Then she would pop down on the floor and gather everyone around. It was a bit like watching the Pied Piper at work. Michele had the unique ability to chat to one of the youngsters, without condescension, and simultaneously keep the rest of the group scurrying to find the word she had identified. They were never random words, but words to reinforce her message of self-help and responsibility.  All subtly delivered.

Michele was one special irreplaceable Rotarian.

Meeting In Review - March 23rd 2023
Co-President Gary opened the meeting and then asked all present to stand and share a minutes silence remembering our fellow Rotarian and dear friend, Michele Mann, who passed away earlier in the week following a long illness.

Prior to hearing from our guest speakers,  Gary called  for club notices.

Club Notices:

Golf - Co President Graham extended his thanks to all who supported, volunteered or played in the March 17th tournament, which was a huge success, raising $35,000 net, which will be shared between Dove Hospice and the Rotary Club of St. Johns as noted in last weeks Bulletin.  March 15th 2024 is booked for next year's tournament - now is a good time to enter this in your diary.

Environment - Peter B. reminded members that preparations at Apirana Reserve are progressing well for the July planting.  An actual date of the planting will be announced as soon as known.

Club Service  Directors - apologies for the changes in guest speakers and dates, however these are now locked in as noted in this Bulletin.

Youth Services - Liz advised that RYPEN is scheduled for this weekend.  MUNA will be held in late May and Liz is looking for three volunteers to assist with time keeping during the Assembly May 26 / 27.  Please contact Liz if you can assist.

Following the completion of the club business discussions, Peter B was invited to introduce our three Guest Speakers; Mimi Dunbar, from Glendowie College  and Anthony Hawke and Joseph Bahoo from Sacred Heart College.  The students were accompanied by their Science Teachers, Thais Nafissi and Anna Mortiaux,

All three students were sponsored by St. Johns Rotary to attend the two week live-in National Science & Technology  Forum which was held at Auckland University, last January.

The Forum is a programme aimed at high achieving, well-rounded science, maths and technology students in Year 12 at New Zealand Secondary Schools who will be returning to Year 13 and who are planning to study science or technology subjects at tertiary level in New Zealand.

By the end of the Forum students should have a better understanding of the area of science they wish to pursue and the tertiary courses available. They should also gain an appreciation of the part that science and technology play in the wider community.  The Forum provides an opportunity for high achieving students to spend time with similar minded people and the experiences gained invariably result in overall personal growth.

All three St. Johns sponsored students couldn't speak more highly regarding the value of the experience which was attended by 168 students from across New Zealand.  Apart from the forum helping all three students to now be better prepared to make their next life decision, they all made friendships which have the making of lasting a lifetime.

This was truely one of those talks by three exceptional students who have been given life changing experiences, thanks to the support extended by St Johns Rotary and members really needed to be there to appreciate the experience that the Forum gave them.

All three students are a credit to their schools and families and we thank them sincerely for taking the time to share their experiences with us.

Club Meeting Dates
THURSDAY MARCH 30TH - BREAKFAST MEETING.  Committee  Meetings - An opportunity to discuss the status of current club projects and activities, and your input is important and vital to the direction of the club.  If time permits following the committee meetings, the meeting will be opened to members' snap chats.

THURSDAY APRIL 6th - BREAKFAST MEETING - GUEST SPEAKERS:  HELEN SARGENT AND ANA KENNEDY, from "Heart 4 KIDS". Helen will explain what they do, including their recent mission to Fiji.  Each year in the Pacific, 350 children are born with congenital heart disease.  Unfortunately, they have limited access to life saving surgery.  How can we help?  Ana Kennedy is a Nurse Practitioner and is leader of the ward nursing team.  Ana has twenty years experience as a nurse practitioner both in the US and NZ.

THURSDAY APRIL 13th - DINNER MEETING - GUEST SPEAKER MICHELLE BRINSDEN - EASTERN BAYS BIRDSONG PROJECT.  Michelle is a Senior Conservation Advisor at Auckland Council, and co-ordinates the Eastern Bays Songbird Project Inc., which aims to restore and regenerate the natural ecosystems of the Eastern Bays to create a sanctuary alive with birds, enhancing the lives of our residents and visitors.

To achieve this, they mobilise the community to take action both on their properties and in local open spaces to provide environments where populations of birds and invertebrates can flourish, They work with local people and organisations already trapping pests and encourage and coordinate the local community to trap throughout the residential areas. This project will contribute significantly and be integral to Pest Free Auckland 2050 and Predator Free New Zealand by 2050.

Save The Date
One of the most important dates in the Rotary Year is "Change-over".

The 2023 Change-over for St. Johns Rotary is scheduled for Thursday June 22nd - an evening dinner.  Recogniseing our current Co-Presidents and the Board for all they have achieved this past year, and to welcome in the new President and Board, deserves a good turn-out.

More information and detail to come, but in the meantime please note this in your diary now!! THANK YOU

    Trees For Survival Autumn Newsletter

Welcome to our autumn newsletter. When the days are starting to get shorter again we know it is time to gear up for a new planting season. Our team are currently out and about assessing planting sites and matching these with schools for our upcoming winter planting days.

This year, we will be planting with 188 schools across Aotearoa - a record number of Trees for Survival schools! We are looking forward to hopefully plant 140,000 native plants this year - protecting waterways and creating habitat for native wildlife as well as forming lasting memories with our fantastic schools, partners and awesome Trees for Survival community.

We are especially excited this year as we will be planting with new schools in new areas: Coromandel, Taranaki, Whakatāne and Opotiki. We would especially like to thank our new schools for coming on board, Marc and Sally at TfS for organising this and the wider team including the many Menz Sheds who all worked together to establish the Trees for Survival programme in these new areas.

And a special thank you goes to Todd Energy, our regional partner in Taranaki, for helping us bring Trees for Survival to schools across the Taranaki region.

A tribute to Noel Holyoake - founder of Trees for Survival

It was with great sadness that we had to share the news of Noel's passing with you earlier this month. Noel's foresight and vision 33 years ago led to the founding of the Trees for Survival Charitable Trust. Noel watched Trees for Survival grow into a success planting programme that reaches many schools across beautiful Aotearoa and he has served Trees for Survival as a board member and later patron until his passing.

Noel will be missed by the Trees for Survival team and our thoughts are with his family at this time.
In lieu of flowers, Noel requested that donations can be made to Trees for Survival and we would like to thank all of you who have done so and also sent their heartfelt messages in honour of Noel.

    New irrigation timers for school

In 2022, we started rolling out new irrigation timers to our schools to help with water management and sustainability. We are equipping our schools with rain sensor Toro timers which are a fantastic upgrade from our existing timers. TfS conducted a 10 school trial of the Toro rain sensor timers over the summer of 2021/22. This is the time that is most important for TfS to have reliable irrigation systems, as over this period even a couple of days without watering badly effects our little seedlings. The trial was a great success with the Toro timers from Parkland Products performing very well.
All schools that joined us in 2022 have already received the Toro timers and many of our existing schools have also received them. We are pleased to announce that over the next few months we will be installing Toro timers in all TfS schools in the Auckland, Northland, Taranaki, and Bay of Plenty regions.

A big thank you goes to our Logistics Manager Marc who is doing a fantastic job organising the timer upgrade project. Marc played a central role in selecting the right product for our schools' needs with great help from our supporters Parkland Products. He is also doing an outstanding job managing the installation of the new timers as well as training our teachers and facilitators in their operation. Most of our community production partners at the Menz Sheds have also been undertaking installation and maintenance of these new timers, building capacity and capabilities for the future.

    Landowner Success story

We were thrilled to receive an email from a previous landowner sharing with us an update from a planting they received in 2015. Ardmore School, who have been a Trees for Survival School for 23 years (since 1999!), planted these native trees in 2015 and the results 8 years on are a true testimony to the great job the students did.

Thank you for sharing your journey with us:

"8 years ago, Ardmore students worked hard to plant out a corner of our paddock that is next to a very old bush block. It's been an extremely satisfying and humbling few years since watching it all take off and grow. The tuis, piwakawaka and kotare find food in there now and recently we've found that Weta have moved in, they hide under the old cabbage tree leaves. Thank you Ardmore school for creating fantastic native habitat where there was once only mud and grass. Your planting here will be included in a covenant which will protect it forever."

We would also like to thank Watercare who have supported Ardmore School in the Trees for Survival programme when they planted this site in 2015 and are still supporting Ardmore School along with five other schools in the Hunua area.

    Thank you

We hope you enjoyed our newsletter,
