Co-President Gary opened the meeting and then asked all present to stand and share a minutes silence remembering our fellow Rotarian and dear friend, Michele Mann, who passed away earlier in the week following a long illness. Prior to hearing from our guest speakers, Gary called for club notices. Club Notices: Golf - Co President Graham extended his thanks to all who supported, volunteered or played in the March 17th tournament, which was a huge success, raising $35,000 net, which will be shared between Dove Hospice and the Rotary Club of St. Johns as noted in last weeks Bulletin. March 15th 2024 is booked for next year's tournament - now is a good time to enter this in your diary. Environment - Peter B. reminded members that preparations at Apirana Reserve are progressing well for the July planting. An actual date of the planting will be announced as soon as known. Club Service Directors - apologies for the changes in guest speakers and dates, however these are now locked in as noted in this Bulletin. Youth Services - Liz advised that RYPEN is scheduled for this weekend. MUNA will be held in late May and Liz is looking for three volunteers to assist with time keeping during the Assembly May 26 / 27. Please contact Liz if you can assist. Following the completion of the club business discussions, Peter B was invited to introduce our three Guest Speakers; Mimi Dunbar, from Glendowie College and Anthony Hawke and Joseph Bahoo from Sacred Heart College. The students were accompanied by their Science Teachers, Thais Nafissi and Anna Mortiaux, All three students were sponsored by St. Johns Rotary to attend the two week live-in National Science & Technology Forum which was held at Auckland University, last January. The Forum is a programme aimed at high achieving, well-rounded science, maths and technology students in Year 12 at New Zealand Secondary Schools who will be returning to Year 13 and who are planning to study science or technology subjects at tertiary level in New Zealand. By the end of the Forum students should have a better understanding of the area of science they wish to pursue and the tertiary courses available. They should also gain an appreciation of the part that science and technology play in the wider community. The Forum provides an opportunity for high achieving students to spend time with similar minded people and the experiences gained invariably result in overall personal growth. All three St. Johns sponsored students couldn't speak more highly regarding the value of the experience which was attended by 168 students from across New Zealand. Apart from the forum helping all three students to now be better prepared to make their next life decision, they all made friendships which have the making of lasting a lifetime. This was truely one of those talks by three exceptional students who have been given life changing experiences, thanks to the support extended by St Johns Rotary and members really needed to be there to appreciate the experience that the Forum gave them. All three students are a credit to their schools and families and we thank them sincerely for taking the time to share their experiences with us. |
