Meeting In Review - Feb 2nd 2023
At our first meeting of the year, there were 16 members present and one guest, Pauline from Belgium.

The meeting started with the introduction  of "Clarence the Cone".  Clarence is a cone (a traffic cone which was on the table just as a joke!)  Gary said that we need to learn from the recent disasters, and help people who need help as we all know someone who was affected by the floods.

CLUB NOTICES:
Golf Day:  David advised that the event was nearly all sold out and the organising team are happy with planning to date.  There is still the ability to sponsor if anyone wants to, or knows someone who wants to.

We acknowledged Graham Fabian’s participation again and we all agreed it is amazing.
More volunteers are required - please contact Lesley if you can help on the day.

District Conference - March 31 - April 1st:  To date there are 60 registered, (15 from St. Johns), and we need to have close to 250 to make budget.  Remember our club is the sponsor (underwriter) for this event and we have to all contribute to make sure we have a successful event.

David H and Allan S are about to start visiting as many clubs as possible in the District, with a presentation to encourage further registrations.  This presentation will be shared at next week’s dinner meeting.

Apirana Reserve - 12 February: Picnic as detailed in last weeks Bulletin has been cancelled.  See separate story below.

Apirana Reserve Mulching Day: at Apirana February 19th.

Flood Relief:  Penny has been helping and she advised that the Facebook page worked well to get donations.  They still need blankets and food so if you can help, contact Penny and she will advise you where to drop off.

Salvation Army: Angus noted that a big thank you to Gary was appropriate.  He has put in many hours with his grand kids to help out with the food bank over the holidays. Gary said it is great for networking and he enjoyed it.

Book Fair: Miles and Aubrey have put in many hours at the Barfoot & Thompson stadium preparing storage areas getting ready for the next book fair.  You can drop off books at the stadium all year round for the fair. Last year 6 from the club helped out and earned $900 for the club. The book fair is a project that takes all year to organize.

Monday 13 February:  Pauline from Belgium will be at the club for lunch with her parents. If you would like to join them for lunch let Gary know.

Planning for bus trip to Coopers Creek Vine Yard February 26th:  Opportunity to sit back and listen to music and taste a little wine.  More details to follow.

Many thanks to Lynette B. for recording notes from the 2nd Feb meeting in the Editors absence.

District 9920 Annual Conference - A Must To Attend
Friday 31 March - Saturday 1st April 2023

Rotary St Johns, your club, is responsible for hosting this important event so your support is needed by coming along for a great time.  The programme is still being finalised but so far it is a wonderful mix of social/networking events and incredibly inspiring speakers.  Being close to home, it is easy to get to, and the venue is impressive, as anyone who has been to Karaka Bloodstock will attest to.  So register your place today, especially as you will want to get along to the full programme (Friday night dinner is limited to the first 120 registrants).

Friday: Foundation Dinner and charity auction
Saturday: Conference
Saturday: Past District Governor Cocktail Hour
Saturday: Awards Dinner

Picnic Apirana Reserve - CANCELLED
The following email from Ken, Nanda and Roger says it all!

"We surrender !     The incessant rain has meant that Elton J, Ed S, Snoop D, and Fat Boy Slim ( or is that Slim Boy Fat ? ), have cancelled their concerts at the reserve, and having Nanda sing, Paula and Roger do their Michael Flattely dance impressions, and me play the zither, was hardly the stop-gap entertainment that everyone would have been happy with.    The ground is absolutely sodden, the grass is literally unable to be mowed, and not wishing to be sued because everyone has ' wet-bum-itis ' we have regrettably taken the step of cancelling New Year 2023.

However, we would still love to have your help and join us at the reserve when we are there.   There is much to be done as the weeds have exploded with the warmth and the rain, and we also need help to prepare this year's planting area.     Roger sends out an email to let everyone know when we will be there, so if for some unfathomable reason you are not on the list please let me know.

Sorry everyone, as I realise this was to be the social event of 2023 but we will work hard this year to ensure we plant enough to try to soak up the flood water, together with asking our 'bosses' to give us the help we so desperately need."
St. Johns Rotary / New World Annual Golf Tournament:

March 17th 2023!

Whitford Park Golf Club, and the expectation is that this will  sell-out very quickly.   Interested?  Diary today and let Dave Hartstone know that you would like to book a team.

If you are not a golfer but would like to be part of the day - please contact Lesley Harris, who is looking for volunteers to help run the day.
